The struggle of working on my ideas
Hey everyone, I wanted to write about something I have been struggling with for a while now and that’s actually working on my own ideas. I have recently moved countries and I have decided now it’s the right time to start working on my own projects.
The nice thing about this is that I can finally explore things I have wanted to do for a long time. The problem though is that I have a lot of ideas and choosing one to work on can be harder than actually doing it.
I regularly find myself jumping between ideas: Thinking of a game I wanted to make, moving onto an app idea I had sitting in my notes for the last two years, maybe the new TTRPG idea I thought of while laying in bed last night. What about learning a new skill or exploring a new tool!
Having too many options makes it very difficult to decide where to actually spend my time.
Overthinking things
This is where I struggle - a LOT!!! I can spend countless hours thinking about what I should work on than actually working on anything. And after I decide on what to work on I can spend a lot of time thinking about that idea than building it (what features should it have, is it going to be a success, will people like it, how about pricing, how about a website for it, what if it fails, what if I don’t have the skills to do it?).
This type of thinking can sometimes help (you can say it’s some sort of planning, right?) but most of the time is another excuse to not start working on it. It feels productive but in reality I am not making any meaningful progress.
So…
I guess the solution to this will be to just start? I need to spend less time on trying to find the perfect idea and more time on actually making things. I need to stop thinking I am not ready and just do it!
I know it’s easier said than done when your whole life you tend to overthink things but I need to apply this thinking more.
Not sure why I am typing all these, maybe to just get it out of my head, or ... maybe another excuse to not work on my projects :D
Let’s see what happens next I guess!
